Hi Rob, I agree that more than anything, the role of the K Manager is to establish context. In fact, this may be the only thing a knowledge manager really does, although their job description might indicate otherwise.
Establishing context requires that we truly understand what knowledge is, or represents. Some kind of fundamental meaning should be arrived at first. The closest I can depict this meaning is, knowledge represents our understanding of how things function. It is a momentary clarity into the ongoing machinations and changes of life. Thus, it can have many forms and disciplines, like physics, biology, psychology etc. Thus, the role of K manager is to use this insight/understanding to further organise the great quantities of knowledge (other examples of how things work), information and data into a cohesive enterprise. And to do so requires a strong, central meaning or goal. So knowledge is a stepping stone to a higher goal, which could be reflected as both inner or outer ie personal growth/happiness or a better mousetrap.
