Hi Kelly--

As I see it, IMs play a supporting role in the
process of KM--collecting, organizing, presenting
information and knowledge in a way that makes
more accessible to incidental needs. Making
sure that relevant users find the appropriate
knowledge products during their active search
phase implies that MIS must aim to not only
passively organize information, but also to
PUSH info/knowledge products to the proper
agents.

Information managers play a vital role in
knowledge management in so far as they contribute
to knowledge creation. Technology is an
oft-relied tool in managing information,
but as many studies have pointed out, processed
information that end up as unread reports
hardly contribute new value to the company.
In fact, they serve to reinforce
the misconception that technology-assisted
MIS is impressive, but unproductive in
real terms.

Here's an interesting angle to study: how
significant is the role of IMs in small to medium sized
enterprises, where knowledge management
activities are less technology-focused?

Christina
