It seems to me that, unlike other fields of endeavour, knowledge management has more to do with 'self-inventiveness' than the strict application of established principles. I come back to the idea that by understanding what knowledge is, it becomes possible to apply knowledge management principles intrinsically, then as time goes on, more formally as best practices etc. So every organization, academic or otherwise, is vested with the responsibility of developing their own KM regime, based on knowledge awareness. So what is required is some background understanding of epistemology etc.
