I think that the diversity of opinion we see with regards to Knowledge Management, and to a lesser extent, KM roles and responsibilities is perhaps not based on different notions or visions of the same thing but lies somewhat closer to a perception or though that the different things we are looking at are approximately the same. So there is a tendency to dispute points of view when in fact we are not comparing like with like.

On the one hand I am sure there are quite a few people, in Europe at least (and where I can observe peoples opinions on a day to day basis), who would not like to see society in general run like a for profit multinational with all that this would imply and who certainly would not like to see data, information and knowledge gathered, used and controlled in quite the same way as this might occur in forward reaching, knowledge oriented business. The same also would be true for an overemphasis on the use of power based bureaucratic and political game plans in place of the profit demands, commercial drivers and customer orientation of a lot of businesses.

Having said that I would tend to agree with the general notions regarding to some degree the interdependence of data, information and knowledge as seen in the world of hybrid politics, philosophy and economics i.e. business and government and the reasonable need to structure, organize and manage assets (data, information and knowledge) in this context. So going from data through information to knowledge is no more conceptually difficult than to follow a path from OLTP to EIS/DSS/Data Warehousing etc. to Knowledge Discovery / Structured Intellectual Capital / GroupWare / Internet and the ongoing uncovering, understanding, structuring, integration and (re-)use of know how.
