good questions are often better than the best answers. This seems to be one of them.

Again, I would stress the contingency approach; it all depends on the business you are in. Sometimes a receptioneist might very well qualify for the job, he or she knows who's who, who does what and where they are, sometimes a more focused prfile is called for.

My 2 cents worth of charcteristics:

- a sense of company history; why are we here and how did we get there?

- excellent people and communications skills; what makes our people tick, why are they doing what they are doing? How can we bring people with similar interests together and how can we incorporate (!) or align these interest with our business interests ?

- a good understanding of the business you are in. What do our customers expect from us and what can we do to go an extra mile?

- a vision based on trust, collaboration, fault-tolerance and expirimenting

- an understanding of the relationships between information (management), knowledge (management), business processes, intangible assets/intellectual capital and innovation.

But after all, I believe there is no best way to organize, so there can't be a best profile for a (C)KO...
