In my opinion it's not re-inventing a best practice, it's re-applying a best principle (minor detail :-)).
Trouble with the old "Boss Practice" was that there was still a "generation issue" due to the span-of-control problem. Also the generations followed hierarchy/functionality, which isn't always usefull as other stakes get in the way (power, etc.).
I agree that it is an old principle re-applied. But as long if its useful and effective in reaching our business objectives, I can't object :-).
