Agreed, you kindly put your finger on one of the other reasons (hence the exclamation mark in my first reaction) for installing knowledge transfer centres. When not finding the right connection yourself within two or three generations they can provide a whole range of new "nodes" in the network.
Also they provide "quick and dirty" connectivity for new employees. One (!, :-)) of several connections provided to them in our introductionary program (the "class" with which they follow this program is another example).
I also agree with you and Karl Erik Sveiby, who states; "Trust is the bandwith of communication"...
