There is a wealth of information about the importance of privacy in the Internet literature. It is a particular problem on the Internet that companies and individuals provide personal details to an anonymous organisation without really knowing what happens to them.
The Internet experience suggests that a firm privacy policy is required which is very clear, and then the means to police and enforce it.
Books such as Digital Property by Lesley Ellen Harris and Webonomics by Evan Schwartz.
Also look at Wired's Privacy Policy for an indication of what these things look like ( and a couple of useful links ).
