Consulting firms tradionally have separate IS and IT departments. With KM becoming more and more "fashionable" in our practice areas, we tried to develop a simple model to describe the relationship of IS with KM and IT initiatives. The result was a three-layered approach (I tried to convert the model into ASCII text):

/\
/ \
/ KM \
/------\
/ IS \
/----------\
/ IT/OA \
--------------

Notice that IS is playing a central role interfacing with both KM and IT initiatives. KM is on top of the pyramid - not meant to be a specific KM application or produt but rather seen as the definition of the "front-end" to the consultants/users - this is the space were information streams are bundled together and served up as a combination of products & services that enable the consultant to perform their tasks.

The second layer depicts the knowledge/information architecture/infrastructure that IS is building and maintaining. Here you'll find core KM components that support KM initiatives. Examples include document management, IC/ content publishing or work group/flow applications. It is also the foundation layer for basic messaging and information research services.

The network/OA infrastructure is the foundation layer for network protocols, topologies and services - it puts everything together to make the TP LAN/WAN run smoothly. In addition, the office application (OA) layer contains all standard office desktop software.
