Sue Ann,

The key here is to find the 'sweet spot' that links competencies with interests. We have a form on our intranet so the data entry and updates are done by the enduser. There are 3 aspects, a list on personal interests, this is the things that you are willing to put your energy into, they can be hobbies and work related, they may also be areas where you wish to learn or require mentoring. The next section is your competencies, the areas where you can help others, either by consulting, solving problems, pointing to the literature or to other experts. the final piece is a homepage generator, a simple way for everyone to create and update their individual spaces.

Another area that yields quick results is elecronic confercing to support and extend meetings. We are now involved with Communities of Practice, informal work related groups that meet to learn and discuss how they do their work. Etienne Wenger has just published a great book called Communities of Practice. Learning, meaning & identity. See link to his latest article.

They combine learning, community and repository in an interesting and insightful way.
