I fully agree with the idea of the internet being a communication channel for the development of numerous sub cultures. Perhaps the intranet can have the same effect, albeit at a smaller scale? KM should rather be aimed at showing management how to benefit from technology as opposed to being a tehnology pundit itself. As an example, KM can very effectively be applied in demonstrating the key communicators, over the intranet, within a company. Naturally, it could also be used to identify workers (knowledge sources) who don't participate in this technology. If mananement's role is to create an environment in which productivity can flow, let alone innovation, then such KM methods are critical for success. What we may really be seeking is a work method for "new" management using "new" technologies to cope with "new" situations. We have the commuting worker, next, the commuting manager. A virtual manager if you wish. A good manager with one-on-one skills is still worth his weight in...uhhm..diamonds, but they becoming an increasingly scarce resource. Maybe this IS chaos theory we're living, where we are IN a state of innovation brought about by many factors, of which technology is but one. The cultural effects remain to be seen.
