I am working on a paper in which I suggest that the internet may contribute to the ever increasing rate of innovation in out society. This discussion of KM is a good example of information being expanded, but whether knowledge is being generated is to be determined. I expect the internet to generate numerous subcultures with their unique rules, etc. But looking for the internet to create a culture that in turn create a better climate for KM within a company fails to appreciate the literature that exists on applied cultural change, rural sociology, and agricultural extension. KM as defined by Yogesh Malhotra is a tool for using information technology and human creativity to address issues of organizational success or failure. Thus, if KM is pitched right to management it should sell itself and prove its own worth. When moving from academic to business or government, one must always demonstrate the potential of one's tools and not expect others to believe simply because you do. You must make sure you also understand the goals and values of your clients, otherwise your demonstration, though successful in your eyes, may be a failure in the eyes of those you must convince.
