The art of art: is knowledge management art?

Hi again

In recently reviewing "thinking" software applications, I came across some business processes indicating the 'art of..' this and 'the art of...' that, which enticed me into launching a pet project to investigate the "meaning" of such 'art'. A simple definition, given to me by a Phd in art, stated...'art is beauty, if it isn't beautiful, it isn't art.'

This definition worked reasonably well for me until the word ART crept into the KM domain. Now for the definitive question. Is practical KM solutions ART i.e. does beauty play any role at all? Permit me to argue with myself for a byte, for the sake of your entertainment. If KM is ART, we should hand it over to the artists to develop and NOT the IT and Methodology punters. On the other hand, if there is "merely" an ART to KM, then smart people can learn such an art and apply it artfully. Assuming such a form of "art" exists within KM, then where does one find the structure and techniques of such art to study and apply?

Lastly, a previous lead mentioned the 'art of science'. Conquering the consequences of the information age, would surely require the art of understanding.

Your comments would be humbly appreciated.
