Knowledge Management Survey of HRD Executives (ASTD)

Are intellectual capital and the learning organization just buzzwords? Perhaps, this survey of national HRD executives, conducted by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), provides some pointers.

Th e survey, published in the most recent issue of the Training & Development magazine is accessible online (temporarily) at:

http://www.astd.org/magazine/curren t/research.htm.

Some quick points from the survey are listed below.

83 %: executives are more familiar with learning organization than intellectual capital;
39 %: executives are more familiar with knowledge management;
90%: executives consider intellectual capital an important issue;
45%: executives had heard about intellectual capital only in last year.

Other terms usually associated with intellectual capital include:
knowledge 89%
learning 70 %
best practices 61 %

Based on the survey, the bre akup of companies engaged in various knowledge activities is:

40%: have someone overseeing organizational learning;
10%: have someone overseeing intellectual capital;
49%: have HRD or training as he lead or partner in the learning organization ini tiatives.
