There are two aspects of knowledge creation. Asking the particular question that will advance the group understanding. This does not have to be a paradigm shifter if it keeps the momentum going, opens the dialog to new perspectives, allows a new participant to enter the dialog or refines a commonly held mental model.

The other aspect is verbalizing and or visualizing individual constructs and mental models. Part of the art of making tacit knowledge available to the group.

You have rightly pointed out the social support that is necessary for this to take place. I'm interested in tools to help grow the groupmind that support these two aspects of knowledge creation.

Quality questions need to be both "right" and "bright" i.e. on target and innovative to move the dialog forward. It has been suggested that there are levels of questions that explore different patterns in an answer stream. Some of this work has been published by M. Darling at MIT. WebGrid a personal construct tool from Brian Gaines, KSI at Calgary is one way to make tacit knowledge more accessible.

What other tools can we use to help with knowledge creation?
