Hi Martyn and Lars-Oluf
An interesting thread you have started here, Lars-Oluf, but I'm afraid it is all much simpler than it appears to be.
"Top Management" in most organisations are keen on KM not just because of the assets question - whic certainly makes sense if we are in business to create wealth (however you measure it), but also to provide services or supply physical products. the role of managers is to solve the problems encountered in the supply of those things the company is created for.
Knowledge management is important because:
knowledge is the driver for production of product/service - without Knowledge we are not able to invent, to test, to sell, to make, to distribute or to administrate the organisation.
management is essential to get the best out of the people who "own" the knowledge - to optimise their application of knowledge, their appropriate sharing of it, their development of knwoledge and knowledge enhancing skills. With respect to best practice - perhaps we should say "good practice" as "best" implies an end point and surely we are looking for continuous improvement? It is always good to see how others approach similar problems - to benchmark with competitors and in some areas of our business, with customers and suppliers too. This enables the company to test whether it is as good as it could be, and to learn new and different ways, as well as create excitement amongst its people by holding up models.
A good discussion - let's hear more.
