Good point! One can replace 'This is red!' with 'Washington D.C. is the capital of USA' or with 'There are 16 ounces to a pound' in the above cases... and the same would hold, generally speaking... however, as observed by Denham... what is of interest is what we do with it... more so what it does to us... that is the link between information and action... which seems relevant for understanding knowledge as a context-sensitive, action-oriented process...

However, the earlier distinction of the following interactions observed by Don seems interesting, however, with some qualifications:

machine - machine : almost always data - bits and bytes - the language of machines...
human - machine : could be data, information or knowledge...
human - human : could be data, information or knowledge...

seems that humans provide the context, the meaning and provide the capability of translating information into [potential for] action... unless it is a programmed response, of course...

There is existing research on 'media richness' which is stirring up some new debate in the research circles, a topic to discuss perhaps on some other day...
