I agree!!!!!
My father runs a million pound+ UK business.
Does he have a definition of Knowledge? Hell no, but he knows when one of his staff is using their knowledge to benefit a client and he knows how to use his knowledge to pull the right strings to get a difficult risk insured.
Does my father care about Knowledge Ecologies, Intranets and Knowledge Management theory when he's facing immediate commercial threats from heavy weight competition? Hell no!!!
What he does know is he has people who make daily business decisions which affect his business. He knows how to look after them. He knows how to get them talking so they share whatever this knowledge thing is around.
Does he measure knowledge? No.
He uses the measures I described in the previous posting. Why? Because they're measures against the bottom line and they're simple.
At the end of the day he uses KM practices I have taught him to the benefit of the business. The moment he stops making money from those practices he'll move on and find something that will keep his business profitable.
IMHO big corporations have a lot to learn from the small, smart, successful business which snap at their heels.
