I have recently completed initial research on the role, responsibilities, challenges, and competencies of CKOs. I interviewed 25 of them across North America. What is apparent to me is that most of them are still operating from the perspective of their original function- IT, HR, Corporate Librarian, Legal/Technical, etc. Few have stretched beyond the boundaries of what I call their particular `lens' on the world. For me there are two dimensions that the CKOs need to pay attention to: crossing the functional boundaries of the business in a highly integrative way, and embedding their work in enterprise wide business strategy. I feel that this is a major `stretch' for most of them. Any suggestions about how these newly annointed CKOs could make this strategic and integrative stretch work for them?
