Tom,
I think you have a point there... however, one needs to be aware of the two aspects of communication: the first relates to the communication of 'bits and bytes' and the second relates to the communication of 'meaning' or 'sense.'
The traditional view of information, based on the information-processing theory is limited in its capacity for communication of meaning... and communication of meaning... often heard in terms such as 'vision,' 'culture,' 'context,' 'frame of reference,' etc., seems more relevant to the issue of knowledge... On a sidenote, this is the biggest challenge facing most search engines and similar devices which often overwhelm the user with [relevant or irrelevant] information without 'making sense.' This problem is expected to become compounded with ever-increasing volumes of easily available 'data,' which often rides under the garb of 'information.'
