Hi Boerg,

You might be interested in the fact that I have
completed research into the challenges and
competencies of 25 CKOs I interviewed across North
America. As it turned out, their role was
basically described as one of transforming
intellectual capital into profit. The 2 sub-sets
under this role were:
* creating a learning organization
* building a knowledge management infrastructure
You appear to be right on target with you issue
question. I have just written an article
summarizing my findings on this topic.

I am also working with The Conference Board to
initiate a second piece of research on the
integration of Learning Management and Knowledge
Management. This if a difficult bit because
of the two (although I have identified 5)
radically different lenses that present CKOs
operate from: IT, which focuses on knowledge
management infrastructure, and HR, which focuses
on the learning organization. These two
disciplines do not even know how to talk to one
another.

This brings me to a third theme. I have put
forward the idea of Strategic Knowledge Teams
that are comprised of an IT, HR, and Strategy
leader who together develop a strategy to
craft tomorrow's needed core competencies to build
shareholder value. They efforts are facilitated
by the CKO.

Anyway, in my view, you're getting at the heart
of a deep and potentially divisive issue. It
needs to be resolved strategically.
