Do Universities have a knowledge sharing culture?

As organisations (recognised to be in the knowledge business), universities and other higher education institutions face similar challenges that many other non-profit and for-profit organisations face.

Universities are undergoing transformations due to a range of external forces such as market competition, virtualisation, internationalisation and so forth. To respond to these challenges, universities seek to share information and knowledge among the academic community within the institution.

Traditionally, universities have been the sites of knowledge creation, acquisition and dissemination. However, the knowledge created by the academic community is not effectively shared within. The focus of universities should be based on making individual knowledge reusable for the achievement of the missions of the university (academic excellence, research and involvement in society).

1. How can universities create a knowledge sharing culture?

I am in a process of doing a research on determining whether lecturers share (ie research and teaching)knowledge amongst themselves, accross faculties, schools and departments. If not, how can the university create a knowledge sharing culture.

Any suggestions or research articles related to this?
