Dear Don:

I personally take the classical Platonic view of "justified true belief". (actually it is Nonakas's interpretation of Fedon, but it is accurate). In that sense I agree that there is a tangible reality (a NOW as you state). Conformity to reality is the measure of knowledge. Our cognitive patterns (tacit knowledge) leads us to interpret this reality. In this sense I would not use the subconcious or concious criteria. It is actually quite outdated (strictly Freudian). Conciousness is actually a continuum whose state is relative. Our applied cognition to stimuli is knowledge. I understand your point, because cognition and stimuli usually intertwine (a reflexive process adding to the complexities of tacit knowledge). Maybe this is enough to bridge our different viewpoints.
