Greetings Justine,

There is no 'standard', template or agreed format for a knowledge audit that I'm aware of. The structure you follow depends to a large degree on the objectives, the questions you seek to answer and the issues that emerge from your exploration.

I have come to recognize a subtle distinction between an audit and a knowledge mapping exercise. The audit is about measuring compliance, documenting deviation from given practice or policy and providing guidance to remedy the situation. Mapping on the other hand, has an emphasis on exploration, charting, location & discovery, it is conducted with a more open agenda and seeks to trace the sources, sinks and flows of knowledge. Tries to find the opportunities, constraints, competitive advatages and latent potentials for knowledge work within the organization or group.

What you 'find' and how you best present also depend on the methods adopted to observe & collect the data, your conceptions of what knowledge really is and the 'message' you wish to convey.

Here are some further links and thoughts
