Denham,

Polanyi defined tacit K as not codifiable while explicit K as codifiable. Both reside in the brain. There is no clear defined boundary between the two in brain. In fact, the boundary is in the state of flux and change all the time. It is valid to say to convert tacit K to explicit K. this process occurs in our brain unconsiously. K codification is to convert explicit K to documents. When we do that, new tacit K generated and the flux of the boundary between tacit and explicit K evolves.

K codification requires tacit K to do it. And the same time the conversion between tacit to explicit K also happens but unconciously. The popular SECI model still valid but left out steps and detail definations.

Best Regards

Jerry
