I think that story telling is only one aspect of a culture (Any culture - not just a KM culture). Other aspects which are also contributory are things like symbols; Organisational structures, power groups; control mechanisms...

Storytelling is a lever which if you use correctly can easily help you persuade an audience on an emotional level. This which is why it is so powerful. It is not necessarily equated with KM, however, Dennings treatment does use it in this context probably because this is the latest mgmt thing. It can equally be used to promote a machine bureaucracy however this would be less emotionally appealing.

Most treatments of culture categorisation include 'storytelling' explicitly - see Balogan and Hope-Hailey 'Exploring Strategic Change' or John L Thompson "Strategic mgmt"
