KM theory and Practice

Hi All,

Over about last fifty years, what we observe is the non-stop smorgasbord of management techniques that are being served up to many organizations such as empowerment, management by objectives, downsizing, outsourcing just to name a few, and now KM. These management models or techniques emerged from problems and were invented by people facing real problems. Business process reengineering (BPR), for example, started from companies like Ford and HP whose managers were experimenting with new uses of information technology to link processes that cut across functional boundaries. The movement came later.

KM is around almost ten years. I believe that there are advances in both KM theory and practice. I wonder what is concensus on the connection between KM theory and pratice if any. Is KM just like any other fads originated from the people facing the problem and evolve into common models or techniques by the practitioners? What are the popular KM tools and methods based on epistemologically grounded theory? I agree the idea that KM has no breakthroughs over the years. I know there are lots of institutions and individuals developing KM theories. I wonder the possibility of the concensus of KM theory that truly connect to KM practice. Should such theory exist, are we able to say the breakthrough of KM depending on the emergence of such theory?

Jerry
