I suppose the first point is how much is new! We have been storytelling since we were hunters and gathers to pass on knowledge. And many people use it naturally, equally as metophor is used along with anecdote. A problem is that we are faced with many new ideas/methods/approaches to managing and managment and many can be discarde or over-run by the latest. How many iniatives are the product of someone attending a conference.
I recently read Ian Mitroff's Stakeholders of the Organisational Mind from the early 80's and storytelling forms s significant part. Although I see little reference book to this or the sources referenced
I think the problem lies in if it is the only way to do KM! I would suggest it isn't it is another method for our toolbox. Also I am aware of storytelling being applied in organisations as a means of collecting and sharing both knowledge and understanding. Story can be used positivly and negativly and the story doesn't have to be true to create the required change/effect. There are ethicall issues in the application, type and nature of the application of a techniques such as story/narritive.
I would recommend you take a look at David Snowdens at IBM's work on Story/Narrative, and would recommned his talks or masterclasses on the subject. This work has a more solid, mature and reasoned underpinning.
A suggestion is that we need to make sure that the Emperor is truly wearing clothes.
Finally if you have any references to the use of story at Enron, World-Com, and Global Crossing I would be grateful as it links to some other reading/wwriting I and doing.
