Interesting perspective, Jeffrey.
In my reading of The Springboard, I took Storytelling as more of a method to help with change management of any type. Denning started with a KM project, so many of his examples have to do with KM. But the heart of storytelling, as I take it, is a way to help people understand change or some new corporate direction.
I could certainly see where stories are used to build false hope or a false picture of what is happening. These will always appear and throw distrust on the people spreading the stories. Unfortunately, in the case of the companies you mention the stories were backed up with (falsified) data that made the stories appear true.
