Mr. Barber -- I sincerely hope that no important decisions were made on the basis of your measurements of intellectual assests. Your definition ignores many of the difficult isues attendent on the definitions of knowledge and knowledge assets -- definitions which may well be
impossible to formulate.I'm at a total loss to understand how your definition provides anything other than capitalization per employee. How can your definition be?

I would think, at the minimum, you should subtract all physical and financial asets before your division. Then you may run into the clearly incorrect idea that intellectual capital is the difference between book and market value --see virtually any discussion of what drives markets.

Don't take my word for it. Check out Paul Straussman's (sp?) work -- he was worked hard and brilliantly on the isues of understanding and measuring intellectual capital and assets, and of putting his ideas to empirical tests, in both books and articles. I apologize for lack of links, but I'm sure Google will lead you to the good stuff.
