Hi Clare, I too was once faced with this question, and looked at historical records for Service companies / Consultancies only (i.e. exclude manufacturers) where total numbers of shares and share values are known over a time period. Also recvords of numbers of personnel over time.
CALCULATE: No of Shares x Value per share = Value of Company at Time T1.Divide this by no of personnal at T1. Result gives intellectual asset per employee (and totals) at T1. If you have the data repeat for Times T2, T3 etc. From this you can get changes over time, threshold measures for different sizes of company etc.
