Greetings Phil,

The key to intranet success is interaction. Connect your content with the activities and interests of your firm. Publishing static content is a dead end street, you need to engage your users, allow them to suggest, critique, publish their own content. Install feedback forms, have e-mail links to content owners everywhere, host conversations and discussions using web conferencing software, permit blogging.

Take the time and trouble to design meaningful navigational aids, provide the best search engine your organization can afford, put efforts into developing a shared ontology (the concepts and issues that really matter!) use this for meta tags and for an XML thesaurus.

Encourage individual ownership, this is the only way to ensure the content will remain relevant, updated, applicable and useful. Look for those informal communities of practice and offer them a space to publish their insights. Find out what your users want and deliver!

Get top management to use and evangelize the intranet, without their sanction, engagement and interest, you will have an uphill battle.

In the end it is not the technology that matters, look carefully at the firm's recognition and reward structures, encourage the 'natural evangelists' to participate, create some slack and some social spaces for the informal exchanges, get your top people to contribute by asking for script. Make it relevant!!
