KM in a nutshell

We are faced with an obstacle. What happens?

1. we get an idea (tacit knowledge) that we attempt to communicate (explicit knowledge). Both aspects of knowledge are required to make the process happen.

Once the idea gets shared, what happens?

2. the idea becomes information + data

Why?

Information imparts the meaning, data provides the carrier of the meaning. For example, a book delivers a message, but the alphabet is the 'data', providing the means for carrying the message along. Same with computers and the data transmissions (0/1).

So information and data exist simulateously, just as tacit/explicit knowledge exist simultaneously.

Tacit knowledge provides the meaning, explicit knowledge is the carrier. Same process, different mediums, slightly different interpretations (we are not machines).

So KM in a nutshell is all about understanding how the process works, and attempting to make it as effecient and effective as possible.

knowledge creation = tacit + explicit
knowledge sharing = information + data

So knowledge is knowledge, but when it gets shared it transforms into information + data.

Our brains (right/left or subconsious/conscious) are hardwired to work together. What we are doing with IT is attempting to hardwire information and data, to replicate the process, and in doing so, recreate knowledge as close to its original form as possible.
