Actually,
I don't know that van Gogh was valued much beyond his circle of friends and family. True, he was buddies with Gaugin, who was more "successful" during his lifetime than was Vincent. Was Vermeer successful? Not during his lifetime. People in his circle appear to have valued his work, but it hasn't been until the last 1/2 century that his work has come to be appreciated as having intrinsic artistic value.
Each person / organization needs to define what is valuable and what is success. Any effort can only add to value/success if it aligns with the goals and direction of the person / organization.
