While it is not quite as academic as some of these other discussions, have you read The Cathedral and the Bazaar by Eric Raymond? He talks about the internal motivations of hackers - especially the "open source" community - as being associated with the admiration of ones peers and the pride of knowing something you wrote is being used (and modified) by many other people.
