The business world is mostly a Johnny come lately to the world of "knowledge sharing" and motivation. The plain fact is that knowledge sharing is rampant in all the professions, and has been so for centuries. Some investigation of the experience outside the busines community would, in all likelyhood, be very useful -- and very likely would be a first as well.
Motivation? Consider the fact that the many brilliant scholars, scientists, and thinkers who have pondered issues of motivation and behaviour virtually all disagree. Freud and Carl Rogers,Howard Gardner (a "must" author), the District Attorney of New York, advertising executives all disagree. That simply means that understanding behaviour is often very dificult. My own experience as an executive, a teacher, and a father -of grown sons - strongly suggests a "one-size fits all" solution will seldom work.
Just to help folks get out of the "business box", let me cite an intriguing article in Tues. New York Times' Science Section -- Why We're So Nice: Wired to Cooperate. In short, the article suggests that we all have motivation to cooperate as a genetic gift -- the work is very elegant, and istotally based on experimental data. The article appeared on July 23, 2002 and can be found at the NYT WebSite http://www.nytimes.com/pages/science/index.html
under the Social Science heading.
Think about the last time you kept something secret? Why did you?
I agree with much of what Denham says. I just use different language.
