Best of luck for your thesis discussion.
You do not need to worry about building upon others' ideas as you are covered by fair use doctrine of copyright laws. Just like you would cite other sources, critique them, and on a limited level you can even directly use extracts without explicit copyright permissions from specific sources, you could do the same with all or most information available in public or private sources subject to their respective terms of copyright and use.
