Akhil,

I can relate to most of these thoughts given our internal discussions of future technologies and related services that are on the charts. The model of free and for-fee service seems interesting, but there are prevailing examples of services that were free and have gone for-fee and have shown some success. When free quality information was in abundance, there was general resistance for paying for any such information available online. With most free quality information sites either shutting their doors or switching to a for-fee model, this seems to be less of a problem.

The key issue that goes with these ideas is implementation thereof. For instance, the biggest challenge in terms of un-answered queries is determining the cost / price basis for adequately addressing any query. Related issues are that of handling negotiations and transactions electronically and perhaps, automatically, and processing of payments and allocations of returns thus received. Authenticity, validation, escrow etc. are some of the specific functionalities that need attention in terms of setting something up.

The model you outlined is in line with various other models that have been tested out there and that we have been trying to refine. Given limited, if any, success of such models based on the CoP and similar models needs to be treated with caution, however. Outside the realm of CoPs, these 'AskMe' type of models are becoming a staple of most content driven sites as well as traditional advice driven companies.

Thank you for your thoughts.

BK
