Hi Gautam,
Interesting observation about the distinction between VC and CoP. Perhaps, VC can support multiple COPs with specific interests and focus. COPs could emerge from within the VC around specific interests, shared goals, and projects and after meeting their goals may again blend in the broader VC. Therefore, the two do not seem essentially mutually exclusive, but may be able to support goals of specific interests as well as those of the broader community within which these subsets get defined.
Fortunately, BRINT Think Tank has maintained a record of zero flaming, this culture of the community has been earlier described as a key characteristic of this community. Also, we have often seen some emergence of specific groups with specific interests who have shown some level of sustained collaboration of ideas over a sustained duration.
The problem of a face to face meeting results from having tens of thousands of members dispersed around the world and getting them together is a challenge in itself. But it seems to be a good idea to be able to put a face to the voice, although based on our experience that is neither critical nor a necessary lever for creating a VC or a COP.
Thank you for sharing your inputs.
BK
