Hi,

I've been out of touch with Brint for over a year and hence trying to get a feel of what has been going on (so sorry if I repeat what has already said or ignore some valid point that has been made earlier).

In my view a Virtual community hardly ever qualifies as a Community of Practice ...it might become a virtual community, it mightspawn off a CoP, but by itself it can never be/ or aspire to be a CoP.

I believe that a CoP has a rite of initiation, that causes members to be on a similar understanding and appreciate where "each is coming from". Virtual communities are too porous, with too much diversity to be enagaging in dialogue and shared discovery.

In fact, I believe that the reason why so much flaming on virtual communities (whether web based like Brint or idea-x.net) or e-mail listservs take place , is because people do not take the effort to get to know each other's mental models and neither reflect on their own.

If brint wwwboard wants to spawn off a CoP it needs to take these people and at least have a face to face meeting. Intense group dialogue will familiarise why people ...that will be a start..then the next steps will evolve.
