Hi Martyn

I guess a good people rule is that everyone has an opinion. Well, here is mine relative to your above response.

I think business rules are tightly linked to, what I call, business laws.

Example: If the KM business law is that knowledge must be shared across all departments, then

Various business rules are designed to implement the law.

Rule 1 could state that all resumes must be shared via an interdepartmental intranet, with pictures.

Rule 2 could state that all intra-compant experience should be linked to individual resumes, and then shared again.

Rule 3 could state that shared information interests (overlaps) should be further explored via at least a monthly meeting between relevant departments and/or individuals.

Sub Rule 3.a could state that the results of these meetings should be placed within a specific group of topics and shared with all relevant departments.

Rule 4 could state that a progress check should be performed by X person, every 6 months, and compared with competitor knowledge on subject.

Rule 5 could state that the competitive analysis should be ranked/weighted and published to all relevant departments, per topic.

Rule 6 could state that a list of employess, interested in certain topics (via Intranet query tracking) should be compiled and broadcast for possible COP.

Rule 7 could state that 1 hour of experienced personnel time per day could be spent on organized knowledge sharing with "newcomers".

etc, etc, etc.

The purpose of rules is to implement policy. Rules can change frequently, and should be constantly checked for conflicts. Policy hardly ever change except for enhancements.

Hope this helps.
