Hi Martyn,
I don't think we can develop universal business rules. As people, organizations, environments are all specific and idiosincratic, a competitive advantage is some kind of unique interaction between these elements, and not a general rule.
If I had to develop kinda meta-rule, I'd say the a firm should try to free and nurture natural energy and passions of people by combining personal freedom and passion with oganizational flexibility and a large series of strong and weak external ties.
That's what for istance Oticon has done successfully.
It's not a rule, but a meta-rule which each firm could implement by looking into passions and desires of their specific staff...
