Hi Gordon,
I think systematic learning can be effective if it deals with all the dimensions of knowledge: theory, practice and social interaction, possibly managed in the work environment rather than in a class. Teaching in the real work environment both theory and practice, with your real colleagues, can help develop a real work practice (competence?) and knowledge of strenghts, weaknesses, hobbies, tastes of your work fellows (something the scholars call transactive memory or collective tacit knowledge in the number of february of the Academy of Management Journal, showing the power of this good coordination in the NBA basketball).
the real learning could be not just classes or learning by doing (which can neglect theory), but kind of class by doing (theory and practice and you colleagues)trasmitting theory, practice and social interaction, the theree components of the concepts of competence and knowledge
