A future technique that has not been mentioned is finding a way to enable your engineers to collaborate virtually as well as if they were in the same room.
Being able to access a portal on a mobile device is not likely to solve the problem that for many KM functions, portals have not delivered the goods.
Nowadays, there are solutions for this "human to human collaboration" which can remedy some of this virtual teaming. But make no mistake that these are only early solutions, and that they main barriers are not technical, but are human-related. It isn't that easy to go from talking to somebody face-to-face, to effectively using chat and an electronic whiteboard.
Whereas this human to human collaboration may seem easy, using it effectively will give the company a lasting competitive advantage.
