yes, you're perfectly right, and media richness theory states that you need richer media when you want to trasmit ambiguous messages or to achieve complicated tasks. But there are findings which are contradictory related to media richness theory. The fact is that most empirical studies regarding the theory were not longitudinal and employed just students, and this is not always the best way to understand a complex social system like an organization. The same medium (let's say e-mail) can be perceived as rich or poor depending on the relationship developed between parties. For istance, e-mail it's often perceived as a cold medium when the two parties have never interacted before, whereas it can be very "hot" when used between two long-standing friends who have already developed kinda jargon to communicate effectively. When two people know each other quite well they develop their language which can be used even on-line. Therefore we should avoid deterministic statements like "E-mail is always colder than f2f interaction", although there are some characteristics of face to face interaction (for istance body language and the management in real time of each other's emotions and feelings) that virtual communication can not reproduce...
