Knowledge Management may be too vast a subject. OD managers now manage knowledge with a specific purpose in mind, which is the best (and less expensive) way of managing knowledge: why do you need to manage it, for what priorities.
These may be:
- accelerating innovation processes
- enhancing organisation versatility and flexibility
- reducing time to market for new products and services
- locating the experts (HR focus)
- support of sales forces and front office
- business intelligence and competition survey
- design of IT infrastructure
- Merger follow up
It seems you are currently working in a business strongly interested in intellectual property (such as the music or pharmaceutical industry). This sounds a bit like a defensive approach and a kind of narrow use of KM. Knowledge can be used in a better way and more offensive approach (reducing time to market as an example).
An interesting essay could be to survey the various practices of KM in your industry and to explore how to optimize the return you could get from KM.Garrett Delcourt
