Hi Reilly,
The opportunities arise from making distinctions between DIK, from a recognition that there are different qualities at play here, that muddling along with no clear thoughts, strategies or recognition of the subtle changes when working with DIK fails to see patterns and focus attention on these different levels.
Take the example of information processing that is often labelled knowledge management, that deals with explicit objects, data repositories and information, but neglects key insights around emergence, need for social discourse and the role of community in knowledge creation, interpretation and learning. Think the often heard phrase, getting the right information to the right people at the right time as a mantra for KM, illustrates this.
Still not convinced a 'scientific', reductionist approach to the brain will tell us much about mind and knowledge, both of which seem to be very social in origin, involve self-organization, take different development paths under different conditions and develop under complex feedback mechanisms.
