Reilly writes "knowledge is what the brain knows, at least more-or-less.

Here I think we depart ways. 'knowing' one jazz player from another by listening to them is not knowledge to me, it is a perceptual skill, same as finding (feeling) you have a headache! or a master carpenter that can 'feel' the grain in a rough piece of wood.

I somewhat agree (concede?) the distinction between brains and minds may be elucidated by reductionist science, but I truely wonder if after we 'know' where thinking takes place, we understand the implications of localised brain impairment and we can visualize brains working, if we what we have information about is a really the equivalent of a mind at work?

Knowhow is very much a part of KM and a large part of the all the current fuss around tacit knowledge. I don't think KM folks have a restrictive view of knowledge, I think they have not made a clear delineation between personal knowing and knowledge on the one hand, and constantly confuse information (perhaps even data) and knowledge qualities on the other hand, hence missing key opportunities.

Progress in understanding knowledge (in my opinion) is more likely to come from improved understanding of social communication systems, memetics, comparative & historical sociology. Of course this will hardly help interventions at the level of individual brains - but who said knowledge is about brains anyway!, it may be a higher level concept rather like a fractal pattern.
