Future Techniques and KnowledgeMapping in manufacturing corporations

Hi!
I´m working on a diploma thesis with the main subject KM in a manufacturing corporation. The company, I´m talking about, has ca. 8000 employees and several locations worldwide. Their main objective is to preserve and consolidate the knowledge used during the production process (it is a special material company with lots of unique knowledge), which is going to be lost with the excess of age of the engineers. So far, the classic practice for KM.

My questions are now:

1) For a company with this size and about 3000 engineers, it might be a long way to generate Knowledge Maps. Are there any examples of other companies? I read the Denham Link http://www.voght.com/cgi-bin/pywiki?KnowledgeMapping which is very interesting, but is there any practical example or advice?

2) The more important one: My tutor wants some "new" approaches or in general "New" things in the area of KM. I read the "FUTURE OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN SMALL ORGANISATIONS" thread posted by Sameer Mitter with all answers. The future techniques are interesting, of course and will definitely influence KM (Portal Systems displayed on PDAs, and better connections like UMTS). But has anybody an idea of something really new? Maybe a new way of generating ontologies or using portal systems in midsize companies with incentive systems and new measurement methods??? This questions refers to the theoretical part on the one hand and the use in practice on the other.

Thanks a lot in advance for you replies and sorry for that long posting.
Regards
Florian
