I very much appreciate all of the helpful responses. Let me give you some context, I am writing my dissertation and have worked with an organization to design and implement a knowledge management system using a behavioral methodology and am trying to write about the theoretical underpinnings that surface in most of the literature. I think one responder made the point that there seems to be a distinction between those whose focus is on technology and those whose focus is on personal interaction. I would agree. From what I can tell there are two camps of theorists, one who rely heavily on Polanyi's concept of knowledge and one that seems to be a hodge podge of theories ultimately focusing on technology. If I were to purport something to that effect in my dissertation, would the KM community raise strong disagreement (assuming they were to read my dissertation, which is highly unlikely). Second, I do understand the distinctions Polanyi made between tacit and explicit knowledge and I actually disagree with his epistemology based on my own theoretical bias (behavior analysis). However, I've heard/read the term "focal knowledge" and am wondering if it is synonomous with "explicit knowledge" or if it is an entirely different concept. If anyone knows about this, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks again. This message board has helped me on more than one occasssion!
